The first Science and Innovation Festival started as an initiative of the educational non-governmental organization SciCo-Science Communication. It took place for the first time in Athens in 2014, under the name Athens Science Festival in cooperation with other organizations and was gradually established as an annual hallmark for the city, a cultural event which is not just about Science but also Technology, Innovation and Art.
Seven years later and having already created 5 more local Science Festivals in Thessaloniki (TSF), Larissa (ThSF), Patras (PSF), Ioannina (ISF) and Cyprus (MSF) the time has come for the magic of Science Festivals to travel to the Aegean islands as well!
Why Aegean Science Festival?
The idea of a festival held on the Aegean islands has been considered by our team for a long time. In an era of rapid growth, ancient philosophers and scientists began to discover scientific findings, develop scientific techniques and turn the Aegean islands into cradles of growth and knowledge. Worthwhile examples are Hippocrates of Kos and Pythagoras of Samos. Coming to today, the University of the Aegean continues this story by developing new scientific findings and innovative discoveries. So we lead ourselves to the necessary creation of a festival that will glorify history and highlight its new promising existence.
A Hybrid Event
The first-ever Aegean Science Festival will take place from 24 to 26 September 2021 and will be hosted in Lemnos. For three days, the local community and its students will explore science in interactive, innovative and fun ways. At the same time, researchers, established scientists, educators and artists will give us their best effort to explain complex scientific concepts and make the audience a part of them. The festival aims to prove to young and old visitors that science is not just about knowledge, but having fun as well!
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an exclusively physical festival is not viable. Therefore, a hybrid format that includes both online and physical events is the best solution.
Organizers
The Aegean Science Festival is organized by the educational organization “Science Communication – SciCo” in collaboration with the Department of Food Science and Nutrition of the Aegean University and various academic, research, and educational institutes.
