The decoding of the human genome 20 years ago has highlighted aspects of our diversity. While genetically all humans are 99.1% alike, each of us is unique. We have a special image, special predispositions, which have been determined by the genetic combination we inherited from our ancestors, by the lifestyle habits passed on to the next generations, but of course by our own daily life that we experience.
In his informative speech titled “Personalized Nutrition Through DNA Analysis”, Professor George Dedoussis suggests that, among all the characteristics of lifestyle, diet plays a dominant role in well-being and morbidity. But not in the same way in everyone, because even in close relatives, there are differences in the risk of weight gain, in the levels of biological indicators, in the vulnerability to infections, in the cognitive functions, and in many others. Our genetic makeup shows the way and shapes our needs, including nutritional needs.
George Dedoussis is Professor of Human Genetics and Nutrition at the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition of Harokopio University in Athens and Vice-Rector of Academic Affairs and Quality Assurance. He received his BSc in Biology from the University of Patras, his master’s degree from the University of Technology «Compiegne» in France, and his PhD from the Medical School of Athens. He has published over 300 papers in journals with a high impact factor (number of citations > 55000) and a h-index>85. He has recently been nominated among the highly cited scientists in the last decade.
